Haut et Fort | Celebrating Local Designers

Last Saturday, we made our way into Montreal to check out Design Haut et Fort, or in English, Loud & Clear, a 3 day design market, this year hosted at Concordia University, celebrating Quebec's talented designers & crafts people. In it's fourth year, the event, imagined and organized by Montreal designer Anne Thomas, is hosted twice annually and features beautiful handmade products like ceramics, furniture, home ware, fashion accessories, illustrated stationery & prints, and more.

An important initiative, Design Haut et Fort provides a forum for local designers to expose their work within a warm and friendly environment, connecting directly with people who love design and are looking for original pieces with a story. Inspired by well-established like-minded events in New York City and Toronto that celebrate local talent during May's worldwide Design Month, Anne Thomas explains the event is an opportunity to celebrate Quebec's originality and local design personality.

We love events like this one because it also gives Mikko a chance to catch up with local designers who's pieces are available at the Boutique! We bumped into our friends at Paperole, a Montreal based publishing house, specialized in playfully colourful illustrated stationery, and had a chance to check out their latest collection. Vincent & Jacinthe, in charge of Paperole's Sales & Creative Direction respectively, work with a slew of incredibly talented local illustrators who celebrate Montreal's unique personality through the art of stationery design.

And of course a visit to Design Haut et Fort wouldn't be complete without stopping by to see Marie-Anne Miljours, the Montreal designer behind eco-friendly vegetable-tanned leather brand Matu, who was recently featured on our blog. Her handbags & other useful pieces like lunch bags, porte-documents & laptop charger holders are available at Mikko and a brand new order will be arriving this week.
